C4 takes on TV2 with new season content

Youth channel C4 is preparing to take on TV2 as it pushes its programming towards more drama content.

The new season on C4 will see the return of Skins, the channel announced at its new season launch today.

The acclaimed British drama is joined by the sci-fi epic Battlestar Galactica, dark drama The Black Donnellys and The OC-esque Friday Night Lights.

Director of C4 Andrew Szusterman denied recent media reports that C4 is moving away from being a music channel.

"This isn't a return to TV4, we're still going to have music at peak and off-peak times," he said.

He also denied that C4 is becoming a dumping ground for programmes which had failed to prove themselves on TV3, saying the new season was a "natural evolution" for the channel.

Szusterman said C4 had more accessible local content and criticised TV2 for being nothing more than a vehicle for the popular soap Shortland Street.

Other content on C4 will include Dai Henwood and his series Roll the Dai, in which the comedian will take on the Outback.

For film fans the Sunday night blockbuster slot is set to return with the classic Godfather trilogy as well as lighter 80's fare like Teen Wolf, Red Dawn and Beetlejuice.

Folk-punk singer/songwriter Elliott Smith rose from indie obscurity to mainstream success in 1997 on the strong point of "Miss Misery," his Academy Award-nominated song from the film Good Will Hunting. A native of Portland, OR, Smith began writing and recording his first songs at age 14, later decorous a fixture of the city's flourishing music aspect; as a member of the isthmus Heatmiser, he debuted in 1993 with the LP Dead Air, issue his first solo effort Roman Candle on the bantam Cavity Search label a year later on. For his 1995 self-titled album, Smith signed with the noted Kill Rock Stars label; Either/Or followed in 1997, around the same fourth dimension that filmmaker and longtime fan Gus Van Sant requested permission to usance the singer's music in his coming Good Will Hunting. Smith as well composed a fistful of modern songs for the soundtrack, among them "Overlook Misery," and when the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced its Oscar nominations the following February, the track was a surprise entry in the Best Original Song category. Although he did not win, Smith performed the song live at the televised Oscar circularize, appearing onstage aboard superstars Trisha Yearwood and eventual award-winner Celine Dion in one of the to the highest degree notably dreamlike musical moments in recent memory. Smith's DreamWorks label debut, XO, followed later on in 1998. Two days later he delivered Figure 8, which indulged in lavish arrangements and orchestrations more than so than whatever of his previous solo efforts. For the future two age, Smith heavy over what was to be his next album, From a Basement on a Hill. He would not live to check its completion, however -- to the shock of friends and fans alike, Smith's body was set up on October 21, 2003. To date, the medical examiner has been unable to determine the cause of death, and the Los Angeles Police Department's investigation corpse open. From a Basement on a Hill was released deuce years shy of the number one day of remembrance of his last to critical herald. In 2007, Kill Rock Stars issued a two-disc set of some of the recent singer's unreleased put to work, all of which had been recorded between 1994 and 1997. Entitled Young Moon, the 24-track ingathering contained three songs that had been antecedently released on hard-to-find compilations or soundtracks, an early version of "Miss Misery," and a live favorite of his, a cover of Big Star's "Baker's dozen."

Vatican weighing in on "good cinema"

By Eric J. Lyman

TAORMINA, Italy (Hollywood Reporter) - The Vatican said
Wednesday that it is working on a set of guidelines for what it
considers "good cinema."

The move comes two days after the Vatican told producers of
"Angels & Demons" that their follow-up to "The Da Vinci Code"
doesn't qualify.

The Vatican on Monday barred Sony Pictures' "Angels &
Demons" from shooting inside any of Rome's churches. On
Wednesday, the film crew said it will move a bit further south
and shoot the church scenes for the film inside the former
royal palace in Caserta, outside Naples, a secular building.

Priest Marco Fibbi, a spokesman for the Diocese of Rome,
said Wednesday that the church was working on a set of
guidelines that will determine whether a film contains the
"proper" religious sentiment.

The Church staunchly opposed "The Da Vinci Code," the 2006
adaptation of the Dan Brown best-seller. "Angels & Demons,"
also based on one of Brown's novels, is entirely set in Rome.
As with its predecessor, "Angels & Demons" stars Tom Hanks and
is being directed by Ron Howard.
